Advanced surveying technologies have revolutionized the speed, accuracy, and coverage for mapping buildings and facilities. These technologies provide multiple new tools to be used in 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). 3D laser scanning uses harmless light to map facilities from a variety of surveying instruments, including tripod-mounted scanners, mobile/aerial LiDAR scanners, and drones. These instruments rapidly map projects of any size and complexity, from small buildings to entire campuses. Intelligent 3D CAD models of existing conditions can be produced from their outputs, which become living digital documents and repositories of information for design and asset management. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and drones are quickly entering these workflows as well. David Headrick from KCI Technologies, Inc. will present how these technologies work with sample projects from each.
