Successful energy management relies on the efficient application of solutions to manage, analyze, and apply data management to meet sustainability goals. In this presentation, attendees will learn about emerging digital solutions and sustainability strategies within the context of proper energy management. Attendees will hear lessons learned from universities, how these applications improved energy data management to address staffing challenges. Finally, what emerging digital solutions and artificial intelligence are on the horizon that expand upon energy management and how it helps to meet sustainability goals. There will be several insights and lessons learned from Georgia Tech’s journey in sustainability and energy management.

James Rosner leads Johnson Controls’ Sustainability Advisory Services team focused on establishing decarbonization goals and roadmaps and oversaw the development of the OpenBlue Net Zero Advisor GHG emissions tracking and reporting application. James has over 20 years of experience leading Higher Education District Energy Central Plants, Sustainability, and Renewable Energy programs while as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management and Planning (University of Denver) and as the Director of Utilities and Energy Management (Oklahoma State University). His experience includes worldwide service as an Air Force Civil Engineer with combat deployments to Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. James is a Professional Engineer and Certified Energy Manager holding a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University and a Master of Science degree in engineering management from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
Kyle Sampson has over 18 years of experience in sales and leadership across the telecommunications and building systems industries. Kyle is currently focused on growing Johnson Control’s Sustainable Infrastructure organization using digitalization to transform the business model, operations and customer experience through the integration of Johnson Controls’ OpenBlue Platform and suite of solutions. He is a trusted customer adviser and advocate, known for his ability to deliver state-of-the-art solutions to bridge the gap between operational and informational technologies. Kyle is passionate about driving innovation, fostering partnerships, and providing outstanding solutions for partners. Outside his professional career, Kyle serves on the board and in a leadership capacity on a variety of non-profit organizations designed to provide scholarship opportunities in the greater Houston area and throughout the state of Texas.
Greg Spiro is a licensed engineer, LEED AP and CEM with over 30 years of mechanical systems experience. Greg has worked at Georgia Tech for over 25 years and is currently Executive Director of Infrastructure. In his time on campus, Greg has worked on a wide variety of projects including mechanical building systems, state of the art research laboratories, central plant and underground chilled water & steam utilities. Greg has served as project manager, engineer of record, facilities engineer and owner’s representative throughout his time at Georgia Tech and has taken an active role in promoting and enforcing Georgia Tech’s standards and sustainability initiatives. Past work includes the planning, development and tracking of the Kendeda building (built to meet all imperatives of the Living Building Challenge), implementation of Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance contracts, management of Georgia Tech’s Utility Analytics team overseeing $30M in annual utility expenses, project management team member for Georgia Tech’s Comprehensive Campus and Climate Action Plans and most recently oversight of Georgia Tech’s operational teams in utilities, buildings and grounds. Greg has also served as a voting member on the ASHRAE BACnet committee.
