Notes for Historic Campus Core Renovations – Success Checklist, Shared with War Stories

Attendees will benefit from hearing in-depth strategy and lessons learned from over two decades of building renovation work in the University of South Carolina Old Campus Historic District. A convenient, 1-page checklist list will be shared with engaging stories based on the comprehensive renovation of five buildings, plus added insights from smaller projects and feasibility studies done within the district to equip listeners to better navigate the complexities of working at the intersection of historic preservation within a modern university campus.

After attending this session, participants will be able to reference the presentation content and use the shared checklist as a framework to:

1. Identify and engage stakeholders and reviewers (both internal and external to the institution) to recognize opportunities and solve challenges early.
2. Navigate conflicting interests effectively, using a proven framework and with the help of key individuals.
3. Realize the unique and unexpected impacts related to the project budget and schedule early to make successful, proactive decisions.
