As universities face mounting pressure to modernize infrastructure, address deferred maintenance, and advance energy efficiency goals, Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) has emerged as a powerful tool for delivering critical facility upgrades without upfront capital outlay. Yet, successfully incorporating ESPC projects into existing facility plans presents unique challenges – especially when balancing ongoing capital projects, stakeholder needs, and strict design standards.
This session will explore proven strategies for aligning ESPC initiatives with university master plans and capital improvement programs. Drawing on the recent experience of the University of Georgia Facility Management Divisions, we will examine how to:
• Identify and prioritize ESPC-eligible projects that complement, rather than conflict with, other planned renovations and new construction.
• Navigate the complexities of integrating ESPC scopes with university design standards, procurement protocols, and stakeholder expectations.
• Coordinate among diverse campus departments to ensure ESPC projects support long-term operational goals and do not disrupt critical academic or research functions.
• Leverage ESPC as a mechanism to address deferred maintenance, reduce energy and operational costs, and achieve measurable sustainability outcomes—all while maintaining compliance with campus policies and state requirements.
