Design and Maintenance Strategies for Running Tracks and Tennis/Pickleball Courts

This session provides college and university facility managers with essential guidance on the design, construction, renovation, and maintenance of running tracks and tennis/pickleball courts. Attendees will explore options for new construction, repair, and replacement, along with an overview of surfacing material alternatives. The presentation will cover key design fundamentals, such as court and track layout, orientation, fencing, and drainage, while addressing site-specific constraints, environmental and geotechnical challenges, and budget considerations. The session also includes practical strategies for maintaining surface performance and extending facility life cycles, with a focus on supporting long-term campus infrastructure planning.

1. Identify key design and construction considerations for new and renovated running tracks and tennis/pickleball courts, including layout, orientation, drainage, and surfacing materials.

2. Evaluate the advantages and limitations of various repair, resurfacing, and replacement strategies to support long-term facility performance and cost-effectiveness.

3. Analyze site-specific factors such as geotechnical conditions, environmental constraints, and budgetary limitations that influence project planning and execution.

4. Apply maintenance best practices to extend the useful life of court and track surfaces while minimizing disruption to campus athletic and recreational programs.
